How VA Combined Ratings Work

VA disability ratings are based on how much each service-connected condition affects your overall health and ability to function. When a veteran has multiple ratings, VA combines them instead of adding them directly.

The basic idea is that each new rating is applied to the remaining “unaffected” portion of the veteran. That is why two ratings that look like they should add to 80% may combine to a lower number before VA rounding.

Why Your VA Rating Rounds to the Nearest 10%

After individual ratings are combined, VA rounds the combined value to the nearest 10%. That rounded number becomes the combined VA disability rating used for compensation.

For example, a raw combined value of 65% generally rounds to 70%. A raw combined value of 64% generally rounds to 60%. This is why small changes in individual ratings can sometimes affect monthly compensation significantly.

VA Disability Pay With Dependents

VA compensation can increase for eligible dependents once a veteran reaches a qualifying disability rating. Dependents may include a spouse, dependent children, and dependent parents. VA’s current compensation tables also state that veterans rated 10% or 20% do not receive higher payments for dependents.

This calculator includes spouse, children under 18, children over 18 in qualifying school, dependent parents, and spouse Aid and Attendance inputs. Actual dependent eligibility should always be confirmed with VA.

What Are the Current VA Disability Rates?

VA publishes disability compensation rates by rating percentage and dependent status. Current VA compensation tables include rates for veterans rated 10% through 100%, with separate tables for veterans with spouses, children, and dependent parents.
